Drug Testing in the Workplace – Is it Really Important?
For a time, government has limited drug and alcohol testing in prisons and as a proof of providing roadside intoxication for the purpose of apprehending a driver. But a dramatic policy shift had government ministers start encouraging drug testing by employees which is kept unreported because firms have been scared of drug testing by bad publicity.
Drug testing for employees have been help up in various courts of law even if it feels as an invasion of privacy for most individuals. An invasions of their private lives is what they feel if you will impose drug testing on them.
Some would sense that the whole concept of drug testing is nothing more than a way for employers to judge current or future employees based on what they do in their personal affairs which do not affect a person’s ability in the workplace. They feel that their company has no right to pry on their private lives outside work.
In addition to making the employee feel privately violated that way, there is also the idea of deprivation.
If you are required to undergo urine drug testing, you will be forced to give a urine sample in the presence of another individual which makes the entire process very uncomfortable. With drug testing cups, urine samples and collected and some people feel humiliated with this and they feel that it is not sanitary, even though this is the best way to get a large number of samples fast.
Because of this ongoing war of drugs, this bad publicity is projected as a defense against it. probably the most effective weapon we have against adult substance abused is drug testing.
A drug test kit for urine is the most prevalent type of drug test, except that drugs will remain undetected in the urine until after several hours. And this is the reason why test cups for drugs of abuse were invented to provide an integrated testing method that would reduce contact with the urine specimen and decrease testing with less mess and fewer components to handle.
When handling urine samples there can be hazards as in possible exposure to HIV and other diseases. For example the urine sample contained blood and upon transport has an accidental splash and some of the contents hit the mouth of an individual, the content of the splash could pose a risk depending on the level of exposure.
If upon checking the urine sample and it is contaminated with blood, then it should be considered capable of transmitting various diseases. However, integrated test cups serve to help alleviate and eliminate the concerns of exposure.
If we simply consider drug testing as a way of finding out if workers are using the substance then the employers will have a reason for the quality of work that they do if these substances are affecting them or not.
