Stanton Peele is an addiction expert with three children, the youngest of whom, an NYU freshman, he dedicates this book to as his addiction-proof child.

I. Addiction, Drugs, and Alcohol

Chapter 1. Addiction is more than a drug reaction. Kids – people – can be and are addicted to many different types of things, like the Internet, pharmaceuticals, and food.

Chapter 2. American children frequently take drugs. They also frequently drink, and binge drink – more than their parents realize. By the time they turn 21, this is standard.

Chapter 3. American drug education doesn’t work – why else would educators claim every year that substance abuse is worse than ever? The main problem is that cops and educators lecture kids about what young people already know more about than the adults.

II. Raising a Non-Addicted Child

Chapter 4. Parents are often told that their impact on their children is limited. This idea is untrue and dangerous – parents are critical to their kids’ likelihood of addiction.

Chapter 5. Children may be less self-disciplined and more out of control than previous generations – a key ingredient in addiction. Core values are antidotes to addiction.

Chapter 6. Children are also more dependent than ever – often even after adulthood. Yet addiction is a variety of dependence. Kids need more practice at independence.

Chapter 7. There are family recipes for moderation in drinking, eating, etc. Teaching your children moderation at home is their best guarantee against addiction and excess.

III. Avoiding Harm: Prevention, Treatment, and Policy

Chapter 8. A family legacy of addiction is not a guarantee kids will be alcoholics or addicts. But care must be taken since so many kids are now treated with addictive drugs.

Chapter 9. Given that most adolescents drink or take drugs, there are clear ways to prevent them from being harmed – methods we’re afraid to consider – like safe rides. This chapter teaches you how to ask questions that teach children to protect themselves.

Chapter 10. Addiction treatment (especially the 12-step variety) is inappropriate and unsuccessful with adolescents. Better methods are demonstrated in this chapter.

Chapter 11. Our policies and education towards adolescent use of drugs and alcohol are models of futility. Here is how we should approach drugs and alcohol in our society, including a sample drug education lecture.
